The Wareham Historical Society will proudly host a program by Tim Martin, Falmouth Genealogical Society President, about an 1873 ship, the W. H. Besse, owned by Wm. H. Besse of New Bedford, a relative of Wareham’s Captain Alden Besse (Besse Park).
WHEN: Monday, September 15, 2025, at 7 p.m.
WHERE: Methodist Meeting House, 495 Main Street, Wareham, MA 02571
William H. Besse employed Captain Benjamin Clark Baker, Mrs. Deborah Spohr Martin’s great grandfather, to take command of a Besse ship. Captain Baker, born in Brewster, MA, traveled to the Pacific, South America, Europe and the East Indies and witnessed the incredible eruption of The Island of Krakatoa. Mary Elizabeth, Captain Baker’s wife, accompanied her husband on his voyages and documented their adventures in an amazing narrative worthy of a block buster movie script. Mary Elizabeth Baker’s detailed descriptions of the horrendous conditions, epidemics and incredible events that they witnessed will be the focus of Mr. Martin’s presentation. We look forward to seeing you!
Refreshments will be served after the program.
Admission: Members are Free, Non-members $2.00.
