Cape Verdean American Buildings and Landscapes: Oakdale and Beyond
Saturday, March 22
12:30-2:30 p.m.
Methodist Meeting House, 495 Main Street, Wareham, MA.
Introducing an archive of historical materials about Cape Verdean-American buildings and landscapes, focusing on Oakdale, an enclave in Wareham.
These materials were collected during preparation for the Vernacular Architecture Forum’s 2023 Annual Meeting, held in Plymouth.
Sally McMurry, conference organizer, will discuss how ordinary buildings and landscapes can tell important stories. She will share what she learned with generous help from Wareham’s Cape Verdean-American community, and suggest how similar inquiries can be extended to other Cape Verdean-American neighborhoods in Wareham and beyond.
After her brief talk, attendees will have an opportunity for open discussion, and for viewing the archive and some key historical source materials.
